Okay, i've had Snitz Forums installed on my site for 2 months now. It has proved quite popular and i've acquired over 300 members with a couple of hundred topics and about 1000 posts.
My problem is, my hosting plan allows me 200MB of server space. Before I started these forums, my site used only 48MB of space, today it is 348MB. That's a 300MB increase in 2 months with the only major addition being the forums.
How could these forums, which are dynamic pages and a database be using up 300MB? If I can't find a solution soon I shall have to remove the board.

I would bet your problem is actually with the private messaging. You probably have a lot of people who are using that instead of the forum or instead of email but haven't been deleting the messages. Check that table and see if it's what is causing you problems. If it is, ask your members to clean out the private messages to save you space.
That's one of the reasons I'm hesitant to implement private messages into the forums...

you may want to check your database, I have over 3000 posts and my database is only clocking in at 2.7 Megs.
have you added the Mod for attaching files to posts? Have you added LOTS of avatars? There has to be something else besides JUST the basic forum code doing this.

DITTO!
Like Dave said, PM could be a major chunk of your space.
Also, what database are you using?

I only started private messaging a few days ago and the problem was still there before I introduced it.
My database is less than 900KB in size and I do not use avatars. I have included the option of attached files but there have been none yet.
I am using Access 97.

Are you sure the database is the size hog? You might open your site with ftp and see just where your storage is being used up.

Aah. My apologies to one and all.
I have just noticed that my hosts (Burlee, he says through gritted teeth) have dumped some majorly large log files into one of my folders. 300MB worth!
This is something I will have to complain to them about, they have already charged me for going over the limit last month!
Once again, apologies for posting this here. At least it has helped me track down the problem and brought up some interesting points.

Well from that statement, it's not your database.

DOH!! Wonder why they would do that?! Wish you the best in getting that straightened out!

Thanks Doug.
My hosts have sorted the problem out. They hadn't removed old log files from previous months which should have been automatically deleted. They have also paid back the money which they charged me for this extra space.

Burlee Sucks!!
I used to be with them abaout 2 years ago. My contract was for unlimited space and bandwith so I uploaded 350mb of files from work to transfer to my home computer and they shut my site down.
They said I was only allowed 50mb of archive file space (unlimited space I thought). Anyhow, they said that because I went over my 50mb limit they charged me $1000.00 for storage fees on those files and also charged me $500.00 for violating my contract.
My contract said unlimited space and bandwith, so I told Burlee to take there bill and shove it a I then got a high speed DSL Line and setup my own server at home. NOW I CONTROL THE SPACE I USE, WHICH REALLY IS UNLIMITED NOW!!!
I would never recomment Burlee to anyone again after that.
Sincerely, JGonier |
