This is driving me insane! Whenever I change my files.. and I want to "refresh" the screen to see my changes.. my browser won't refresh right away. I usually have to wait about 20 minutes or more before the change comes into affect!

Can I buy a clue from someone who knows what I need to change on my browser to make it show my changes immediately?? I know it used to work.. but something changed .. I have no clue.. that's why I need to buy one!!

Thx bunches!!!!

Control-F5 will always go get the latest version of the page

in IE... "tools", "internet options", "Temporary Internet Files: Settings", and then select "every time i visit page" to turn off page caching....

in the world of internet programming.... "cache is evil"

Ur right.. cache is deadly!

OK.. did what you said.. changed the settings to EVERY TIME (was on Automatic).. did the CTRL/F5 did the REFRESH.. I deleted my cookies and I deleted all my history and I even rebooted by computer.. here's the kicker..

I DELETED the file I changed.. and it STILL shows the old file.. I looked in the directory and the file i'm requesting isn't even in the directory!!! EEEESSSSHH!!!

OK.. I have a few more cents.. can I buy another clue?? hehehe

Your ISP is probably cacheing. A lot of them do that so they don't use as much of their own bandwidth. They store a retrieved page for a short period of time so that any subsequent hits retrieve the one on THEIR server...not the real server file.

I can't tell you how crazy this is making me. I dialed up onto a different account.. not the same ISP (I have DSL and also a regular dialup nothing to do with my DSL ISP) and the page shows up! And it's not even in the directory!!!

I'm sitting here shaking my head and wonder to myself how come I like coding and computers so much!?!?! hehehe

Any other thots on this? (gonna keep buying as many clues as I can!)

Don't forget that most webservers will also cache pages to improve performance. do you have access to stop and start the webserver service ?

No, I dont' have that access.. I"m jes "renting" server space!

I thot maybe I had created the problem by changing something.. anything!! but not knowing what.

It finally came back.. but took hours this time! :(

So, if anyone has any other suggestions on how to see changes immediately please PLEASE let me know!

Thx!

If you have Windows 98 try installing and running PWS ( personal web server ) on your system to test pages prior to uploading them, unless you are testing server components that is.

Hmmmm good idea.. I have ME (which I'm not fond of! but came with my new computer!):/

Lots of the pages lately that i'm changing and rearranging are FORUM pages.. but it also happens on other pages as well.. so i know it's not FORUM specific..

Thx for some insight.. more is always welcomed!

As long as you aren't using any Sever installed components, PWS should work fine. I think that's what a lot of people here use as a testing ground so you don't have to constantly upload /refresh /kick computer /fix problem/ upload / refresh /kick computer hee hee
