I'm wondering what are the favorite mods out there - mods that are proven usable and are available to everyone.
What are your top three favorite mods that you use on your forum? What would be your next three fav's?

Active Users, Private Messaging, and Events Calendar
Next three would probably be:
Avatars, Split Topic, and Sub Forums (I know these last two are still new, but I think they are phenomenal and should become part of the base code )<

Active Users, Private Messaging and Avatars.
Followed by Site Integration, Polls and (I'm sure I've forgotten some) Inactive Users.<

Split Topic, Events Calendar, Poll. Avatars, Zuel's Avatar uploads, Forum Rules.
I still haven't installed Private Messaging as I don't see any reason people can't just email each other; what's the point?<

Some folks may register not knowing that their email would be revealed when using the Snitz messaging system.
Some folks have email addresses reserved for just family or business.
Private Messaging may permit them to communicate more freely.

Thanks for the Sub Forum plug.
I think Site Integration, Forum Rules, FAQ Admin, and Split Topic are a definite must for just about any forum out there. They are a big help with management and organization tasks.
I think with some more work the Sub Forums would be a definite plus - especially for forums that have a lot of areas. It can make things a little more organized.<

Because I would like to implement a few of them - but besides "popularity" I can't tell which mods will run without causing problems.
There was at least one rant about how poorly many mods are written. But which ones? Perhaps I should have posted "Which mods should be avoided?"

There are many learned hands on this forum who can, I hope, lend some direction as to which mods they find useful and have employed without ill result. [beige]. . .[/beige]<

Popuplarity is never the best reason to add a mod to your forums; the only thing you should be taking into consideration with each mod is of what benefit it will be to your members, whether they'll appreciate it or not and whether or not it will add anything to the appeal of your forums. If you start adding mods left, right and centre based solely on people's recommendations or ehat seems "cool", you'll soon end up with a bulky, ugly, unusable forum. If I still had a backup of MeTV's first Snitz forum, I'd be able to show you exactly how bad it can turn out.

I do agree with that philosophy. That's why I qualified my recommendations with the reason I use them.

That's good advice and exactly why I posted the question here.
Personally, I think that there are several essential mods. These mods all offer good functional value:

Mike's File Attachment (Proeders),
Poll Mod,
Calendar (which I haven't installed yet)
Site Integration
Email All Users

"Avatars" mod is popular and it seems to be enjoyed by many, so I've added that as well. "Split Topics" seems like it would be useful - recommend elsewhere on Snitz by one of the senior hands. "Private Messaging" can be useful - (I have a couple of major manufacturer's registered on a forum and they wouldn't like their email revealed.)


With the exception of "Avatars", most of the mods listed here add an inherent value to the forum. (Sorry, don't mean to offend any avatar fans out there)

Most of the mods suggested here seem like they add functionality and not just fancy looks or attempts at entertainment.

I agree that functionality of the mod is the most important aspect.
My Top 3

• Private Messages
• Poll Mod
• User Groups

The usergroups has been installed on my test forum and just going through the usual testing procedures. Hopefully the younger members spending a week on probation (view only) and restricted from viewing certain forums for a week may make them think twice about posting one word answers to topics
Maybe Email All Users should be in my Top 3, although it's not used very often it is a good mod imho, to get the word out fast to all members if needed.<

Poll is in my top 3 but lots have said that already so here are 3 more that I like:

custom faq
anti-spam registration
links manager<

Calendar , PM , Active Users. I would say these three are a must in each forum regardless what is the forum for.

Jeez, tough one to answer. I have so many mods on my forum (that I use all the time) it's difficult to say, but I'll have it a go...
1. Email All Users = I modded this a bit to accept HTML messages and now use it to send out newsletters (the newsletter mod time's out on me). I also send out passwords for events weekly to my members, so again, this mod was a must.
2. Private Messaging = For obvious reasons.

3. Calendar Mod & Shout Box (This one's a tie) = I have weekly events every Saturday, so the calendar is a must to keep all my members abreast of what's coming up and where. The Shout Box mod is new for me and I use it as a "Forum Announcements" mod. I could not get the Alert Mod to work, so this one suited my needs just fine.<
