MOD Preview: WYSIWYG Post Editor
24 November 2005, 17:41
[edit 2006-03-06] I've resumed work on developing this mod [/edit]
OK, as promised here is the preview links for the WYSIWYG RTE mod. Please, as it is a live forum and it is a church website, keep the posts clean and use the Testing Forum only. I would appreciate feedback about its functionality in various browsers other than IE. The mod is based on the TinyMCE RTE from tinymce.moxiecode.com and supposedly supports a wide variety of browsers that I don't have access to.
Oh, and please, I know the website in general needs a major overhaul, so just keep the comments to the operational functionality of the RTE. It is a frames based site (baaaad...), but that will be fixed soon enough now that I have an HTML editor for a portal style page. The link will take you directly to default.asp.
The link: St. Paul's Anglican Church Forums User: snitz0, pw: snitz0 (Forumcode privs test account) User: snitz1, pw: snitz1 (Basic RTE test account) User: snitz2 pw: snitz2 (Advanced RTE test account)
I have not customized the RTE in any way yet, the two modes are default as distributed by moxiecode. It can be customized. Left to do: 1) smilies, I have a handle on this one. default RTE set works, but the snitz ones will work soon. [EDIT] thought it was done , needs major work with image manipulation. [/EDIT] 2) Image tag handling issues to resolve. Post fine into db but displayed incorrectly. Getting more intimate with FormatStr and supporting functions than my liking. 3) URLs get parsed twice if inserted using RTE link tool and without "http://" prefix. All other methods of inserting URLs appear to work. Looks more like an RTE bug. 4) Need additional toolbar buttons for code and quote tags. [edit 2006-03-06]Semi-functional[/edit].
5) Admin panel: right now, RTE privs can be assigned on a user by user basis, but I would like to build an admin panel for bulk assignments. 6) HTML to ForumCode conversions: Images, Smilies conversion.URL conversion.Paragraph & CR conversion. Font tags, not yet, too many combos and not practical.
Still a lot of work & testing needed. Getting close now.
[edit 2006-03-06] Surprisingly the modifications to base code are very minimal, I've managed to accomplish most of the integration in an include file. I've re-enabled the test accounts for a short while, appreciate your feedback. Pending positive feedback, I'll post what I have thus far. If anyone is interested to help with this project, email me via the forum. [/edit]

I made the same mod of you, but i've used the RTE editor.
Everything works fine, but i've realized a strange behave when (by client) use forum with firefox on linux computer.
Sometimes (more or less 12 times on 50) the textarea doesn't work fine: normally u write on a white background, but when it doesn't work u write on a gray background and the message isn't save.
did u find the same problem anytimes??

I have limited access to other browsers besides IE, and I usually stay away from Linux. Sorry, can't tell you.... but if you want to test your firefox on linux client on my church site, go ahead and let me know.<

Do you have a link and test account I could look at? Do you run both forum code and HTML together or just HTML? I'm having problems with image tag parsing and I think it may be fine if I allowed HTML only.

Since I've had very little feedback and also due to work load in my real life job, I've had to suspend further development of this mod for a while. It's currently at a point where the basic functionality is there, but I need to work on some of the advanced features. I plan to resume it in January when my workload should lighten up a bit.
Also for the time being, the test accounts above have been temporarily suspended until I can resume work with this mod.

Good luck. I know the feeling as I've had full intentions to clean up and get a more polished version of the Subforums MOD working... only to get slammed with work. I'm going on vacation at the end of the month and hope to get something working then.
I said all that to say this: I am interested in your work, I just haven't had time to really dig into it. Hope things get better in Jan.<

Thanks Jez.... It has been time consuming, but wasn't too difficult a project. I'm kinda stuck now with some of the more difficult tag conversions. I'm allowing simple tags such as the font and color tags to remain in HTML since chkString converts them to HTML before posting to db. I'm concentrating on those tags that are stored as forum code such as images, smilies and code tags. Really just about there, waiting for another brain flash to get the more difficult tags done. Just needs a good test workout before releasing any code.

There was some other instances where this smile manager mod messed things up. I hope it's just this mod that's causing problems since I'm using SHN code (very modified).
<

16 March 2006, 09:43
Trib, I don't have the smilie manager mod installed on my forums. The way I handled the smilies, I relied on the alt attribute. The changes I did in inc_func_common to the smilie function was to insert the forumcode symbols of the smilie icons in the alt attib. That way to convert them back to forumcode I only had to use a single RegEX replace instead of one for each smilie image.
Ah, smart! =) I got some error on a missing "end if" also but I might have done something wrong when inserting your code since I had to edit parts of it to fit my code. I'll have another go at this tomorrow!
<
Nertz
16 March 2006, 10:11
Serritzlev had an "end if" problem too, he's using a heavily modded forum as well. I haven't been able to determine where that problem was. The sample files I gave you were from my lightly modded base 3.4.05 Snitz code.
I downloaded the smilie manager plus mod this morning. From a quick glance at it I think that change above should do the trick, but I'll have a better look at it later tonight. I better get back to work... cheers, Nat<

Tribal, are you sure you included inc_RTE.asp at the right location in inc_header.asp? Remember the copyright notices appear in two places inc_header, and the include inc_RTE should go beneath the second instance of copyright notice.

Trib, I just compared your post.asp to mine, and I don't see anything wrong with it. When you get serritzlev's updates, please let me know what they are. He mentioned an "end if" and some closing table tag problems, but I had a hard time understanding what he meant. I couldn't find any of those problems in base code 3.4.05, and wonder if it is something from the heavily modded forums package.
I think your problem may be with inc_smilies from the smilie manager mod, as that's the only other file affected. I started looking at the smilie manager yesterday, and I hope to have it working with the smilie manager mod soon.

Yup, that's about at the point where inc_smilies starts. So starting to look like the problem is in there.
I also have Nathan's last version of his RTE, and I remember he had some code in there around the smilie manager. Maybe he knew something I don't know... but then I never had the smilie manager installed. I'll have a look at his code again tonight, it may give some clues.

Etymon
Etymon, there are no pre-requisite mods required. In fact you should make sure HTML is turned off in your admin options, and if you have KWhipps' super/admin/mod HTML mod it should be disabled in the admin options.
The javascript error sounds more like tinyMCE package was not copied correctly to your website, thus resulting in a url problem in calling the scripts. You need to extract tinyMCE from the distribution zip with the "use folder names" option, and then copy the entire contents of /tinymce/jscripts/tiny_mce to a folder /tiny_mce in the root of the website (not the forum folder).
If you did copy the entire contents of the tinyMCE distribution zip to your website, you can adjust the following line of code in inc_RTE.asp as follows (add the red part to it)
olef, the mod is not complete and therefore not publicly available yet. It is available in limited distribution by email to those who would like to help and contribute to the project. If you would like to help and contribute, please send me an email via this forum.

Trib, the way the editor works it will convert any textarea named "Message" to RTE on those pages allowed in the if statement in inc_RET.asp. If you want to isolate it to selected forums, you will need to add forum= conditionals to that if or another if statement below it. Not going to be easy though.

Originally posted by tribaliztic hmm...Could I change it so that it only show on textareas named "Message2" for example? =) I think it would be easier to change the textarea names in post.asp IF FORUM_ID = XX?
Trib, sorry I haven't been around for a couple of days, was travelling. I don't think it's a good idea to change textarea name in post.asp, it will affect post_info.asp too, and the quick reply form in topic.asp. Easiest way is to deal with it in inc_RTE.asp.
I have thought about a forum setting where you can decide which forums to allow RTE, I might include that in the next version. I think it's a good idea to allow admins to choose which forums they would allow RTE. It's easy enough adding a new field to the forum table and checking it before loading RTE.
For now though, you can add an if statement in inc_RTE, just below the if statement that checks U_edLev and the allowed pages. But doing this will not allow you to load the RTE in other pages besides post.asp (eg: topic.asp quick reply area)
if Request.QueryString("FORUM_ID")="xx" or Request.QueryString("FORUM_ID")="yy" then .... code to load RTE end if
just replace xx and yy with the forum IDs you want to allow RTE.

Okay, I can't really find where to put this code, could you give me some line numbers maybe? =) Why can't I use this on other pages than post.asp if I add this if statement? What pages is allowed is set before this?
A forum setting would be great!<

29 March 2006, 22:42
trib, with that little patch it wouldn't find a forumID on other pages except post.asp or topic.asp. Give me a little time, I started working on setting forums that allow RTE. I've been coding while in transit on flights, just haven't been able to test it yet from up there. Soon as I get back home I will test it and get you something where you could set which forums to allow RTE. I did get your email and will be investigating your other problem further too.

Hi Nertz,
After I uploaded the file online the MOD did show up. When I was using it offline on Personal Web Server and Windows 98SE, it didn't show at all.
I've just begun to play with it, so I'll let you know more when I get my mind into it more.
Cheers,
Etymon <

Originally posted by Nertz trib, with that little patch it wouldn't find a forumID on other pages except post.asp or topic.asp. Give me a little time, I started working on setting forums that allow RTE. I've been coding while in transit on flights, just haven't been able to test it yet from up there. Soon as I get back home I will test it and get you something where you could set which forums to allow RTE. I did get your email and will be investigating your other problem further too.
Nat
Ah, I didn't think about that one (the forum_id that is...) Great!! I still have a few other things to finish before I'm in a hurry with this one so take your time =) <

These are the next few features/add-ins to the mod for the next limited distribution beta release. If you'd like to see other features, let me know.
Local caching of JS scripts for quicker loads
Use session cookie to save user RTE level
basic Browser compatibility check - will assume all browsers are compatible, and deals with exceptions only. Thus far I've come across two exceptions, WebTV and Safari on Mac OSX. Of course IE4 and earlier and earlier versions of netscape. If you know of more, let me know.
RTE Allowed Forums (Trib)
Smilie Manager changes (Trib & serritzlev)
Maybe if time and my skills allow... TinyMCE config panel to customize editor features for each RTE level. Thought of doing this with a db table, but works against caching. Looking for a secure way to alter JS files from an admin panel
Additional HTML/ForumCode conversions
Struck out items are already complete, tested and ready for the release package.

Nertz: I created a post3.asp and only allow the editor to be used on that page.
I still get errors with the smilies though... One thing I came to think about. Was there some code change to post.asp or topic.asp regarding this? The reason I ask is this: I have a live forum that all my users are using AND a development forum that I and some other are using. They both use the same db. The code in the live forum is NOT modded with this wysiwyg-mod but you and I was looking at their posts from the modded forum.
Hm.. this maybe just made you confused? Do you understand what I'm trying to explain? =) <

Trib, been quite busy at work lately, and I know I will be for some time next few weeks. Haven't had much chance to do much to the mod, but I did start adding allowed forums into the mod. unfortunately I've had to set it aside for a few weeks.
I think I know what you are saying. it shouldn't be a problem viewing posts created in either RTE or forumcode, there was no changes to topic.asp there. I can see a problem only if you edit posts in forumcode that were originally posted with RTE. I'll keep digging though.

Hi Nertz
Have now been testing this amaaazzzzinng pre-mod in production on a test-group af 20 members for 1½ month.
They are all very satisfied using the WYSIWYG editor.
Untill now I have made 1 change:
When trying to use the Preview-button with user-level 1, it comes up with an error. In inc_RTE.asp I added preview to line 164: plugins : "iespell, insertdatetime, preview, searchreplace, print",
I have just two unsolved problems:
When posting/editing a topic or reply,You can normally change the size of the editor-window, this function does not work with the WYSIWYG editor
We use the file-sharing mod.
I have tried to find a solution, but can't find the right one.
So far I found that when attaching af file, the file inc_files_attach.asp is used, with the following code, where I will apriciate to get some help. Have tried to do something like inssmilie, but can't get it to work. When up running on the file-sharing, I will try to let the editor go in production with 130 members:
if UseFile = "true" then Name = URLDecode(CStr(Request("FileToInsert"))) FileNameExt = UCase(Mid(Name,InStrRev(Name,"."))) strFileSize = CStr(Request("fileSize")) Select Case Request("attachType") case "post" if FileNameExt=".SWF" then %> <script> if(opener.document.PostTopic.Message.createTextRange && opener.document.PostTopic.Message.caretPos) { var caretPos = opener.document.PostTopic.Message.caretPos; caretPos.text = "[file]<%=Name%>,<%=memberFldrID%>,<%=cSF%>,<%=request("forumID")%>,width=100,height=100[/file]\n"; } else { opener.document.PostTopic.Message.value+="[file]<%=Name%>,<%=memberFldrID%>,<%=cSF%>,<%=request("forumID")%>,width=100,height=100[/file]\n"; } </script> <%else%> <script> if (opener.document.PostTopic.Message.createTextRange && opener.document.PostTopic.Message.caretPos) { var caretPos = opener.document.PostTopic.Message.caretPos; caretPos.text = "[file]<%=Name%>,<%=memberFldrID%>,<%=cSF%>,<%=request("forumID")%>[/file]\n"; } else { opener.document.PostTopic.Message.value+="[file]<%=Name%>,<%=memberFldrID%>,<%=cSF%>,<%=request("forumID")%>[/file]\n"; } </script> <% end if

Olef,
thanks for the feedback, great to see you have been testing with your commnunity.
the resize issue is something that bugged me too. I've figured out how to allow the RTE to resize, but I haven't been able to get it working with screen size options, at least it won't refresh. Trying to find some time to work on it further, been doing a lot of travellin for work lately.
I don't use any file sharing mods, and had not really thought much about that. I don't think that will be an easy fix. Try looking for add-on plugins to the RTE on sourceforge, there may be a file attachment plugin.

Nertz can you send me the mod for testing, I have a bit of an unorthodox forum built for testing it, but that should only enhance the fun.
If all is correct you have my email. If not then this is it: dominic(a)illhill.com

I think it didn't.
On the other hand, I do get nearly hundred emails a day due to my site, so I might over looked it.
Was it send by the same email I first corresponded with?
I will do a search in my mail.
Greets & thanks,

Mail me if you are looking for that.<
