Merging threads
20 January 2005, 13:16
Is there a facility for doing this?
Two threads that are either rhe same or virtually identical, with perhaps different headings.<

That mod is for splitting a thread which has more than one subject. I've never seen a mod for merging topics.<

CC- did a search- 'Merging' & 'Merging Threads',it brought up -zilch.
Looking at your soulution, it does say, not for moving topics into an existing Thread!!!
Guess it would be a halfway house, merge the two similar topics by moving all posts into one new thread.<

me too most definitely, at the moment I'm having to do it manually in the database, bit of a time consuming pain. I'm already using the split topic mod and the merge topics would be a truly valuable addition<

I never thought about trying to do it manually through the database. It SOUNDS time consuming. Davio, if you were to create such a mod, I would worship the ground you programmed on. :)<

It's coming.
It has been delayed somewhat due to the new role I have taken on here at Snitz. <

A merging topic-mod would be a great addition to Snitz, just like the split-topic mod is .<

I was just thinking what about just modifying the file admin_merge_forums.asp to work with topics instead of forums? ,might be an easier solution than starting from scratch.<

rasure, is that your way of saying "Davio, you're taking a hell of a long time with this mod, dang it!!" lol I have finished on the interface, mid way through coding the...the code! (don't know what else to call it) Then we will do some beta testing and then we're done.
I need an icon though for the Merge Topic mod. Anyone want to do one up?<

Well kind of lol, but I was just thinking after merging some of my forums, though it may be a good starting point. Glad to know you got started though, looking forward to it very much.
Will try and have a go at some icons though, not really my place of expertise but will have a go<

Perhaps this is a good idea for the icon : <

11 October 2005, 17:04
What's that, a zipper? Well it needs to be small enough to fit in along with the other moderator icons we have.
We really need a better way to organise the moderator functions. All these icons making it all so crowded. Not liking it at all. <

Ok here's my icon that I've just made for the merge topics mod, nothing special, clean and to the point <

How's about using a form with a select dropdown with and a "go" type icon?
<
Davio
12 October 2005, 09:39
Yeah, but I would have to put all the moderator functions in there. Having only the merge topic funtion in there wouldn't be worth it.
Something we can look at for v4.<

Ay, sorry, that's what I meant. The form could submit to a javascript function which would then determine the appropriate action to take, based on the selected option.

I was just waiting for you to just pop-up and ask. Still working out the queries and what else needed to be done when moving posts from one topic to another. So still working on the post_info.asp page. Majority of the code is there already.<

I can't imagine a real use for this. A posts a lawnmower repair question and gets an answer. Later, B posts a lawnmower repair question. Just answer with a link to topic A unless it's a different problem completely.
Okay, maybe A and B both post 'Accident on the freeway' at exactly the same time. But what sense would it make to mix in a bunch of posts from topic B with topic A? By the time the moderators caught it they'd likely be off in two separate directions.
I mean, it's not like you're saving memory or anything by merging topics. What's the point?

From my point of view it help keeps things in order, a discussion on "model B serial 1234" (example) would be easier all in one topic rather than hundreds of topics on the same thing. Easier to find when searching forums having just one topic rather loads of topics to trawl through.<

I'd like the feature just in case I needed it (hint hint )
I can make good arguements for either side. Sometimes you see two threads that basically mirror each other and it would be good to merge them together.
On the other hand, there is nothing I hate more than to trawl through a 12-page thread to get information on a MOD or code snippet thats been through 8 different versions in the same thread when I'm looking for all the current stuff...
Just my USD$0.02...<

18 February 2006, 14:27
I don't think anyone would have asked for it if there were no use for it... but if it isn't useful to you, I would suggest you not use it. For me, the use comes in when 3 different people start threads on the same subject, each thread gets a couple of pages long, and then I get angry PMs from people who aren't smart enough to see that there are 3 different threads and they think I've deleted their post for no reason. It's good to keep order in the forum, especially if you have a busy forum.<

I will be looking for some testers soon, to see if got the whole thing down right. There are so many places where a problem could occur and would like to make sure they get fixed before releasing it.
When ready, I'll start a new topic in the MOD forums. And I'll be looking for feedback from the testers. So keep an eye out.<

Sorry guys. Been under lots of work since then. I will work on it next week and see if I can get some progress going again on it.
It is working. Just need to fine tune it to deal with merging topics that have subscriptions.<

Davio has been working very hard to get the 3.4.06 update released for the past couple of months so it is unlikely that he has been able to finish this, and he is now most likely working on the 3.5 release.<

Ah yeah. It's been tough trying to work on this. Tell you what, I'll just release it as a beta so you can all work out the bugs. You guys been longing for this for too long. Might as well I let go of the code. I'll release it later today. Too tired now.<
