Private Messages 3.5
01 August 2004, 15:45

I have taken @tomics version 3.4.xx, Korayem block list MOD and another Admin Mod for Private messages (author unknown), put them together and made a couple of design changes. I hope the above people (and anyone else who has worked on the Private Message MOD), doesnt mind me what I have done here. Since I have done a few design changes, added the block list mod as standard and the extra admin ability to read all members PM's, I thought it was worthy of its own version number VERSION 3.5

OK, now thats out the way onto the main part.
In this mod, I have added the following:

- Member adility to block other memers sending them PM's (taken from the block list MOD). - Added a PM total into the header of every PM Page. - Added extra admin options for admin to be able to read members PM's.
This has been tested on Version 3.4.04 (the sample files in here are from snitz version 3.4.04).

I have added it to www.SnitzBitz.com

1 more thing I almost forgot. In the admin section there are now 2 links for PM. 1, goes to PM maintenece- this is where you can mass delete all read PM's and specify a PM limit etc. The other link goes to the area where you can read other members PM's. The pages within this seection are fully functional, however they dont look very neat (this is the way they came!). Because its in the admin section its not really a big issue as only you will see them. But when I have more time I will neaten them up a little.<

Could we have an admin login to test this out, seeing as it's on a test forum and all. If not, it's not a big deal, but it would be nice smile<

Your "Sent To" and "Date Sent" headers don't line up with the content within the Admin section. Other'n that, looks pretty nice. Good job!<

I did say that though I added this into the admin section I hadnt altered the files and they looked un-tidy. I dont know who wrote those files (the ones that allow you to see other peoples inbox's) but it wasnt me. When I have some more free time I will check that out and make those pages in the admin section neater. But the pages that are seen by the public are what matters foremost.

A script error on blocklist??????? Included in the zip file is the same file on my test site, and there is no error there! Could you tell me exactly what that error was?<

I am getting no error! Sounds like its a fault with your browser!?

daniel123; Private Messages are turned on as default. However if you want e-mail notification to be turned on as default you need to alter the default value in the database. The layout of the inbox works with cookies (not the database). If you open uo pm_view.asp in text editor, near the top it asks you what value should be given, change this from DOUBLE to SINGLE.<

I have modified parts of the Members Inbox section from in the admin part (as I said I would) and added the 'print view option' to privateread.asp.
When I have finished the admin section fully I will upload this into a new version.<

just to let you know I have now uploaded version 3.5.02

differences from version 3.5.01:

- Print Preview to Private messgaes (privateread.asp)

- Slicker deisgn for the admin pages. - Fixed error in admin pages that was occuring when run with mysql database.
- Added file/instructions for Avatar Mod add-on.
- Updated readme file (to reflect above) and given credit to Havvoc for his admin files and serverhacker for his images.

So thats it!!!! unless anyone reports any bugs.

hey u have removed options thing from PM ADMIN? and will u tell me that what do i need to upgrade if im using shn v8?<
GarethMoore1979
09 August 2004, 09:34

the options havent been removed from the admin area but there are 2 links in admin_home.asp
If you follow the instalation instructions in the readme file you shouldnt have any problems.
I dont know about the shn forums because this mod was made and developed on the basic snitz package, but you can try it! just remember to back up your original files first!<

13 August 2004, 19:58

and one thing i want to ask, is there any way possible to restrict administrators from viewing pms of other administrators (only forum admin should have the option?)<
GarethMoore1979
13 August 2004, 21:14

When I downloaded this mod (as an individual feature) there was an option in the index page part to select this, however it didnt work, and so I left it at that. As you know I didnt write this script. The part where you see into other peoples inbox's (hate to critise anyone) but was very poorly written. As you saw in the first of my release before I touched these pages the header columns didnt align, table borders were 5px, and lots of silly errors, things over looked and not tested properly. I fixed the design, looking very neat now!!! Anyway, my point being I did not write the script, and am not about to re-write it so working in an options for which accounts shouldnt be viewable etc are un-realistic.

So far I have uncovered part of the code which was hidden!!! So I have got it down to, no one can read super admins but they can read other admins posts. This is specified in this part of the code:

Code:
if rs("MEMBER_ID") = strSuperAdmin then
Response.Write "No Access</font></td>" & vbNewLine
else
Response.Write "<a href=""admin_pmmaint_view.asp?mem=" & rs("M_NAME") & "&view=inbox"" target=""_self"">Inbox</a></font></td>" & vbNewLine
end if

what I need to do is change the part in blue, from superadmin to admin (mlev3), can anyone help with this? I dont know the exact way it should be printed in the code!<

looks good! how can I change it so that the inbox is at the topic of the list and not the bottom?

17 August 2004, 20:01

oops, that was ment to be top, not topic blush
I ment so that instead of having an extra category with a link to inbox, not have that at all but have the link so that it's up there with:

Home | Profile | Register | Active Topics | Members | Search | FAQ

etc etc.<

is it possible to have the test forum zipped so i can download it?
I'm just having a real hard time trying to figure out where some of this code goes (readme file isn't 100% helpful dissapprove) and I don't want to mess up my forum<
GarethMoore1979
18 August 2004, 16:51

There already is a link at the top to inbox like you want if you follow the readme instructions. If you dont want it adding as a seperate catagory just dont make the changes to default.asp

All the files that need changes are included in the zip file in EXAMPLE_FOLDER. And if you back up your existing files first you want mess anything up :-)<
tjhilder
18 August 2004, 17:28

can you paste how the code should look in DEFAULT.ASP and INC_HEADER.ASP please? because the readme file isn't exactly clear to me (amateur) to where i got to put the code on these files. ----
I'm also having a problem when turning the Private Messages on, you put them on, click submit & when it goes to:

Configuration Posted! Congratulations!
but it shows it set back to off, whats up with that?<
GarethMoore1979
19 August 2004, 13:00

the examples are all in the EXAMPLES-FOLDER. Just search for part of the code that is in the readme file in the example pages and you will see where it is, and where to put it in yours. You have obviously installed the rest of this mod, and the inc_header.asp and default.asp page are the easiest ones out of them all!
After you have revieved the message,

Configuration Posted! Congratulations! (initially it does show that your settings havent been saved, but they have!) if you then go back into the page, you will see they are the ones you just set!
Just experiment with it!

Could you add the "Save Message" feature as included in Huws version ?

I would love to add it! I have just tried to register on that mushroom site but its not sending out the validation e-mail! And I recall trying to do this a few months ago too, again recieved no e-mail!<
GarethMoore1979
23 August 2004, 12:41

OK I got in!
I like the saved feature! is this available as a mod/how did he do that? did he just create another 'status' for the PM and have PM's with 'that status' pulled through another page?! Also, if I where to do this, I would have to limit this (ie only 10 saved pm's), these would have to not be automatically deleted when admins delete all read pm's from maintenance, and saved provate messages would need to be deleted if that particular member is deleted!<

if the error is happening just through scrolling your mouse over- its very unlikely to be a script error!! Its most likely an error with your browser. I havent experienced this error!

Hi, I am not getting any error! Like I said, it must be something to do with your browser. Because you havent told me EXACTLY what the error message was, I dont know how to help you.
But you could try going into your IE options and disable script debugging. try that!<

Getting a funny result. I have a couple users complaining that when they reply to a message the text box does not always pop up. The are using IE with the new service pack. I just had it happen to me when trying to reply (using safari on a Mac) to one of the users having the problem. I compared the source of a correct reply to one that is messed up. They are exactly the same, but the text box is not rendered in the browser? Any ideas? Nice mod BTW.

GarethMoore1979, great mod package!!

In your instructions, you don't include the changes to pop_delete.asp, but you have a pop_delete.asp as part of the file set to upload. pop_delete.asp should not be uploaded from the PM 3.5.03 package if you have other mods installed that modified pop_delete.asp (eg: poll mod).

If you have other mods installed that have modified pop_delete.asp, then you need to edit pop_delete.asp as follows. This is the only difference I found between your pop_delete.asp included in the package and the original 3.4.04 version.
find (approx. line 637-644 in unmodified pop_delete.asp 3.4.04):
Code:

						if not rs.eof then
intA_Replycount = rs("REPLYCOUNT")
else
intA_Replycount = 0
end if

rs.close
set rs = Nothing

Beneath that add:
Code:

'## Forum_SQL - Delete Private Messages that the user has sent or received
strSql = "DELETE FROM " & strTablePrefix & "PM "
strSql = strSql & " WHERE " & strTablePrefix & "PM.M_TO = " & Member_ID
strSql = strSql & " OR " & strTablePrefix & "PM.M_FROM = " & Member_ID

my_Conn.Execute(strSql)

Nat

Question that does not appear to have been asked so far ...
If I already have Private Messages installed on my forum [3.4.05 w/Active Users ... and many other mods], how can I upgrade to PM 3.5 without redoing the entire thing? Is that possible? If so, what changes are necessary?
Thanks -<
GarethMoore1979
16 October 2004, 12:21

all the pages, ie your private inbox/outbox and PM Admin pages are all stand alone pages and you should be free to just overwrite!
You might want to update the images (inc_iconfiles.asp) as some images were re-named. Also add the extra link into admin_home.asp

also, if you didnt have the blocklist addon installed you will need to run the dbs file in mod-setup.
MAKE SURE to back up your old files first before overwriting any, and you wont have any problems!<

Thanks ... Followed your advice and so far all seems well ... Looks good, BTW.
Because of my modded forum, I had to make a few changes. One, on privateread.asp, because I have the additional levels mod installed.
The other two, on privatesend.asp & privatesend_info.asp, include a "Send Private Message to all Moderators" capability. If you'd like, I'll send you those two files & you can incorporate them into the MOD. Simple & well worth it. Send me an E-mail if you want them GarethMoore1979.<

GarethMoore1979, if you will be addin to the mod soon, wonder how hard it would be for you to add another column to the PM: Members Messages admin page with the number of PMs in their in/out box. Was searchin which members didn't clean out PMs, and right now you'd have to look at each individual boxes. the additional column on the messages admin page would make it easier. thanks...

you can overwrite all the pages and it should work just fine. (back up your old files first though just incase).
add any new files that come with the mod.
if you dont already have the BLOCK LIST add on installed then you need to just run the mod setup file again (db file in mod setup), this will create the new fields in the database for block list- and it will also just tell you that the other fields are already created but dont worry about that).
You will need to upload/overwrite images and change inc_iconfile.asp for new images and sizes.
finally, make the changes in admin_home.asp as suggested in the readme file as there are new admin options.

Also I downloaded Snitz Forum 2000 a little while ago and was wondering if I already had the active user mod because I didn't install the mod myself so I didn't do any of the stuff for it in the PM read me file. So I don't know if I need to do it or not any help would be nice thanks.<

thanks!

Hi,

I have already installed 3.5.04 but now would like the above feature.
Do I need to re-install or can I just update the two files above?
Cause I did this (updated the two files)and nothing happened? If you could point me in the right direction I would be grateful.
Cheers

just overwrite the two files. Then when you go to send a new private message you will see an option (tick box) which says "Alert all moderators"<

It's good that there is a PM limit feature, but what will happen if a member has arrived at this limit, and another member wants to send him/her a message? Will it simply not be sent, and will the sender be notified of this? Or will it stay pending until it can be delivered, or will it get lost, never to be seen again? And is it possible to set a custom limit for admins and mods question (Wouldn't want them to miss any potentially important PMs).<

Just put up a new board and I definitely wanted this. Unfortunately, I get an error whenever I try to read a PM:
Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a000d'

Type mismatch: 'cLng'

/ch_forum/privateread.asp, line 52

I've gone through all the code with a fine toothcomb several times. I can't see anything wrong. Anyone have any ideas?
Everything else appears to work. Notifications etc. Just can't read the things! Not sure about the admin reading it, because I disabled that by hand. Have to get it back up again (if I can remember... Then I'll post it here. Somebody earlier in the thread was asking.
Oh, I'm running on Access/ODBC. The line in question is extremely long, but I still had the problem when I shortened it. <

If the member reaches the limit of Private Messages- they will still be able to recieve new Private Messages.....but they wont be able to reply to them or send any new ones until they have cleared out their inbox to within the allowed limit.
Moderators and Admins are exempt from this....they dont have a limit (however you will still notice it specifies a limit in YOUR inbox- but for mods and admins its overwritten).
Just test it out! wink<

post a link to the txt version of your inc_header.asp ( I think you might have placed this part:

' Get Private Message count for display

in the wrong place).

Also go into your 'outbox' and see if you can read messages that you have sent (privatesent.asp)<

By which, of course, I meant shortened it correctly (closing out quotes, "& _". The works.<

both of your errors seem to be code related (the second one especially!!!) just go back and check your code. If you still cant get it right then post links to the txt versions of the files and I will take a look.<

Hey, that was swift!
Same message with the outbox.
My dev machine is currently running a half-hour nested subquery for converting the old DBs. As soon as I can get an explorer window to open, I'll get a text file up and a link to it.sad<
GarethMoore1979

actually for about the txt file- if there was a problem with it it would display an error on every page.
Also if your having the problem with the outbox aswell...
I think there is some sort of an error in your database...try running the DB file again through mod setup. Also check your database ater you have created a few private messages and see if its creating them ok. Post a screen shot of the PM table within your database.<

I think perhaps I deserve the "dozy b****r of the year" award. Have a look at the third post on

http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=56069
I created M_ID as a longint.
That could be it, although the boards main ID field is also a longint.
Since it was apparently running okay (the posts are created in the FORUM_PM table, complete with contents), I thought nothing more about it, but I see now that the M_ID field is empty. What flavour should it be? <

Gareth,

You asked me to post a snap of the DB Structure. Here it is (German Access interface, I'm afraid.

I still have the same problem with being unable to read messages. I also tried moving the code you suggested, but without success. I'm pretty certain it was because the DB didn't create properly, but I'm not sure what the M_ID field ought to be. <

You need to make it indexed (Indiziert) with no doubles allowed (not sure what it is called in german or english, I have a Swedish version of access). Besides that, it looks ok.<

GarethMoore1979

I can't get into my admin section, the second error I posted, so how do I run the mod setup. Thanks for the help.
PS. hink it has to do with the database to but I don't know what is wrong with it. Does the code change any of the other tables in the DB or does it only create the PM table because I made some errors when I originally ran the mod setup and made the PM table manually but didn't change any of the other databases. If it does change other tables could someone tell me which ones and what the changes are (ie. fields and there datatypes) if I get tose I can change them manually and see if that fixes it.<

im so sorry philwhite....I have been caught in in my own problems (php!! lol)...I completly forgot to come back here and check your problem. But im so glad to see you got it working. If there are anymore probs let me know (or send me an e-mail for a quicker reply!)

saberfang
the pm mod inserts some new fields into other existing tables. members table and config_new (off hang I think those are the ones). You MUST set it up via the db file provided in the zip file.
If you cant get into your admin file....(well thats another issue, nothing to do with this). But sort out the problem why you cant get into your admin section. then come back to this and run the db set up file!<

Hi, I just installed this MOD into my 3.4.05 version of forum. It is woring fine. However, The Member List is not displaying correctly.
When I open the list, I could see there are 4 pages, so it means the data is there. When I check the source code, I found the error message as following:

<p>Microsoft VBScript runtime </font> <font face="Arial" size=2>error '800a0009'</font>
<p>
<font face="Arial" size=2>Subscript out of range: 'mM_PMRECEIVE'</font>
<p>
<font face="Arial" size=2>/cobrachen/forum/members.asp</font><font face="Arial" size=2>, line 393</font>

I copied and pasted the codes from the readme file. So while I am working on this issue, if you know the answer, appreciate.
Happy New Year.<

Problem resolved. I missed one of the changes to the strSql = strSql & "M_AIM, M_ICQ, M_MSN, M_YAHOO, M_TITLE, M_POSTS, M_LASTPOSTDATE, M_LASTHEREDATE, M_DATE, M_PMRECEIVE " line.
Thanks and happy new year.<

It's me again.

However, there is a bug in the instruction. In the code modification of Topic.asp, there is one line to add:

rM_PM = 6

This line is part of the command to declare the array. If you read the code you will find out the next one is alo equal to 6. This created a problem to read the repoly correctly.
To make it correct, I renumbered the variables after rM_PM and everything so far works fine.
If anyone already point this out, apologize.
Thx.<

I am getting an error only when I try to send to ALL members or when I try to view the blocklist page. I get "Too Few Parameters. Expected 1."
Depending on the page it gives a line number.
When I push send or submit for sending to all members I get the error for privatesend_info.asp line 168
this line looks like this:

Set rsBlockList = my_Conn.Execute(strSql)

When I click on the icon for blocklist, i get an error on the blocklist.asp page. Can't remember the line number on it. Will post as soon as I can.. Any ideas???
P.S. I love this mod.. I used the other PM mod on a different snitz forum I have and this one far blows away the other one. I can't wait to use it fully!! Great Job Gareth...<

The place to find the code on snitzbitz is the one that just says private messages. Not the link given in here. Here is the direct link to the mod. http://www.snitzbitz.com/mods/download.asp?mid=62&fid=260
Hope that helps. Amy<
