When you press the "Vote Results" button, it logs it as an anonymous vote. It's like an empty vote. It is not counted. This prevents users from seeing the poll results before they vote. But still allows them to view the results, even if they don't want to participate in the poll.

Well, you said it... Compliments, you have mine as well, however I have a problem.
I am running a Snitz 3.4.01 version of this forum, and tried to install it. It alle went well, and I made it to the Poll Configurations in the Admin area.

Why enter your errors here in this topic when Davio has clearly stated there are other areas to post requests for help?
It will make it less confusing both for Davio and other users when they come to search out an answer.

I think I am missing something here. Users can't see results before they vote, but they may view results before participating. This seems contradictory. When you say participate are you referring to something other than voting?

The way I understand it is if they view the poll results before they vote, they void their chance to vote.

Gotcha. This is a much clearer way to say this. Might want to update the feature list to this wording. Also, it would be nice to have a per poll option that says users may vote even after they view results. In fact, I'd be inclined to make this the default, but that's just me. I'm having trouble thinking of many cases where it really matters.

I agree. I would prefer to allow users to see the results before voting (if they're so inclined).<

Got a future idea for you davio and that would be the option of doing lets say multiple choices on a poll lets say 2+ selections on a vote.
Lets say you have a poll that have 15 enties in it but you should be allowed to put 3 of the entries on your poll vote.

FYI
This was discussed in-depth before the MOD was released and the concensus was that people would be influenced by what they see, not what they feel. Kinda like going along with the group instead of voting what you think. So this was not a random choice by Davio. He followed the wishes of the majority. If there are good reasons to make a change, it should be an option set by the admin per poll, as I believe is being suggested.
Again, just to let you know the history of why the Poll MOD went this way.

Hi I havei nstalled your Poll Mod on my site. It seems that all files have been modyfied. But Where is the control, so that I can produce the actual polls... I mean: In which file did I miss something.
The only option I have got on my topic pages is to make new topics.. And when I hit that option it produces the normal form for writing a topic...

Davio -
Good work on the mod I've been using your poll mods ever since I started using Snitz and I think it's one of the most usable mods out there. I remember one of the version where a user could only place 8 answer choices in the poll. I like it that this one can have 15 choice, but it still means that an admin would have to go in a add code, to the db and snitz code, if they wanted, say, 16 or 20 options. One of the options could be to have the following tables:
Of course, this example would make it where only members could vote, but then the admin/mod could not only see who voted, but what their vote choice was. This would also allow for unlimited voting choices for a poll.
Anyways, don't pay an attention to me. Your mod has always worked great, plus, how many people would have more than 15 poll choices in a poll? I just look at column names such as 'answer1' and 'count12' and think "there must be another way"
I've been really critical lately on database designs, and I appologize before-hand if I offend anyone. I don't mean for any of my comments to be taken personally or cast an opinion that someone's design isn't good. This is probably because I'm taking a DB design class right now and the prof has just been picking apart my database designs. Just trying to get ready for my test on Monday <

Davio, question for you... Does this mod allow for a poll to be "open" but the thread locked so that members can vote but comments can not be posted (ie: replies made)? When I lock the thread, the poll is locked too. Any way around this?
Thx<
Davio
12 November 2002, 01:42
BWJM, nope I'm sorry.
But if you are willing to try, it's just the topic.asp file that you need to edit to get what you want to do. Topic.asp checks the topic status to see if it is locked, and displays the results or the answers accordingly. The code would be in the GetFirst() sub.
If you need help with it just start a new topic in the MOD: Help Imeplementation forum.<

Is there any way an admin can find out who voted for what? For example if I have a poll asking people if they will be attending a christmas party I would like to know who is selecting yes,no or undecided. Thank you.<
Davio
04 December 2002, 18:07
You can't with this mod. The voting is anonymous meaning no one knows who voted for what.
You would need to do some extra coding and database modifications to store which option each user voted on then display that data.<

Actually there kinda is a way already but it is a little risky if you don't know ASP. There is a MOD named WhoViewedThis that will show who viewed a topic. I believe, by voting and then viewing a topic, it should tell you who voted. But it may not be accurate as it will tell you who viewed a topic but may or may not have voted. I have it installed and that is how I tell who has viewed important topics. Not accurate but works for me. Might work for you. Do a search for the name. The risky part is that the author refuses to support it. If you know ASP then it shouldn't be a problem. I had a problem (as did several others) and the author never fixed it. I finally got it working for my site.

The poll mod has been updated. Just fixed a bug with the featured poll table on the default.asp page. One of the table borders of the table were not showing, due to some incorrect colspans for the table.
I am also working on a new page for users to put thier featured poll on the front page of thier site, outside of thier forum. It seems that using the included inc_poll.asp file is too tedious to get to work, especially for seasoned programmers like myself.
As usual I will need the opinions of some of the poll mod fans. I am giving the Site Poll (that's what I am calling it) it's own admin options (can turn it on or off, along with other features I will think up of). It will be similar to the way the featured poll is displayed and functions in the forum.
Anyone has any thoughts on the Site Poll feature?<

It's ok. I have decided to change around some things the more I work on it. I am going to release it as a poll mod add-on and not include it with the original poll mod. Not everyone will want it.
Also decided not to store the site poll variables in application variables. Too many application variables isn't good. So I'm getting them directly from the database instead.
Soon be ready for beta testing. And I guess you will be the lucky beta tester before I release it.<

If I undertand the readme/history correctly
Poll Mod History: Version 2.0.3 - Added admin option turn enable/disable users to view poll results before they vote.
- Fixed bug when admin locked a Category/Forum/Topic the poll will automatically be locked too. Each poll will have to be locked individually.
- Modified files: topic.asp, admin_poll.asp, config.asp
I can just update my current topic and config files and replace the old with the new? (current ver 2.01

Uhmm, the site poll mod is actually ready, (2 days ago) but I was waiting on one of my beta testers. But I will release it today.
Mark, what kind of person would make a site poll mod without being able to customize it?
The only little problem I would have is, when you select the "Open poll in new window" feature, it uses the pop_poll.asp file from the forum, which uses forum colors. So I don't know if that's going to be a big problem for users. But I guess I will hear the response after I release it. <

Hopefully, not you! Look forward to seeing the MOD... as to the pop_poll.asp file, I guess we could make a copy of it and rename it say, pop_sitepoll.asp and hardcode the colours in there? Anyway, I guess I shouldn't discuss this here. <

This is not a support forum. Read the readme file or read the first post in this topic to see where to get help for this mod.<

Thanks for a great mod Davio.
Do you have any plans to implement a experation time for a poll? This would be used to restrict users from voting after a designated time period.<

I don't have any plans on the poll mod. Everyone seems to be satisfied where it is now. Is that something that everyone would want? I would like to add a new feature only if users would want it. Not just for one user.<

I found a bug in the code:
I'm using diferent names for the Forum Tables. And because of it, this line:
SUPPORT: If you have any problems please post them in the Help: MOD Implementation forum. DO NOT ASK FOR HELP OR POST YOUR ERROR MESSAGES IN THIS TOPIC!!<

One small question. Is this the Poll Mod that is currently being used on this web site?<
