MOD: Site Integration v1.1 (for Snitz v3.4.xx)
27 August 2002, 11:48

My first MOD release smile:

I helped many people integrate their Snitz installs into their current website design that I decided to ahead with a MOD to make it simpler. The administration page enables/disables the extra include files, in which the additional site code is held.

Download Now!
Development History:
23 Jan 04 20:38:17 - Released version 1.2 (updated installation guide for 3.4.04) 29 Nov 02 09:45:29 - Released version 1.1 (with dynamic color in admin page)
14 Oct 02 21:28:48 - Released as Version 1.0
14 Oct 02 19:20:17 - added strImageURL variable for admin page logo
12 Oct 02 07:57:23 - Updated .zip readme file with additional info.
05 Sep 02 00:00:00 - Updated code to align left/center/right column content to top
05 Sep 02 00:00:00 - Updated code handling header and footer width
03 Sep 02 14:20:07 - Updated with 'footer width' BugFix 03 Sep 02 10:38:31 - Improved readme.htm file
31 Aug 02 18:25:16 - Updated inc_header.asp with Application "down" bugfix
31 Aug 02 08:27:10 - Added 'Show Border' on/off feature to admin page
29 Aug 02 12:06:54 - Improved readme files structure
28 Aug 02 16:18:23 - Included 'strImageURL' compatibility for Snitz Logo
27 Aug 02 17:23:50 - Ammended file typo in admin_config_includes.asp
Issues:
It would be great if the color of the cells in the admin page change when the on/off radio buttons are selected. Unfortunately, my javascript is poor and I can't seem to make this happen. Sorted - thanks to Joatham's fine Javascript code<

Very Good MOD, D3mon. I was thinking of making someything like that for the masses, I'm glad I didn't start it. Great Job.<

Hey thanks Snaayk. I guess most people want to integrate Snitz in some way to make it fit the look/feel of their site.<

It looks like a great MOD, but doesn't the footer have to be included? It's part of the GPL or something like that, you may want to check with the moderators on the legal aspects of that.<
D3mon
27 August 2002, 16:24

Remember that these includes are parts of the users existing web site and not the forum itself.
The 'footer' in this case might be stuff which is at the bottom of all the other pages on his/her website.<

admin_config_includes.asp
Seems to be missing from your zip. bonkers<

Ah yes, I renamed it to admin_config_Integration.asp because 'Includes' didn't sound right.<

seems to work so far

D3mon
27 August 2002, 17:23

ah, found the problem, the target of the form on the admin page is pointing to admin_config_includes.asp rather than admin_config_Integration.asp
Simply rename it in admin_config_integration.asp on line #84

The zip file has been updated.<

27 August 2002, 18:01

Why are the files inc_heder.asp and inc_footer.asp included in the zip?

(I can't find any code changes from the original, thanks!)
Thanks<
D3mon
27 August 2002, 18:12

oh, there are some changes in those files - have a look at the readme.txt in the latest version of the .zip<
D3mon
27 August 2002, 18:29

Updated the .zip file again with readme.htm which may be easier to use than the .txt version. Almost ready for v1.0 release. smile<

What versions are the included inc_header and footer .asp from?
The code changes + pages seem different from my 3.4.01 versions<
D3mon
28 August 2002, 04:58

Lydecker, should be from v3.4.01 - I'll double check them just in case...<
D3mon
28 August 2002, 05:11

I checked against the files in the latest download of 3.4.01 and they are correct. inc_header.asp - around line 300 or so and
inc_footer.asp - near the bottom at line 76 or thereabouts.<

The snitz logo on the page "admin_config_integration.asp"
needs the "strImageURL" variable prefixed.

Hello
Thanks for your tip yesterday about this forum mod, I have installed it and am now tring to tweak it...You can view it at:
http://www.english.ltsn.ac.uk/discussion/forum/default.asp

Problems:
1. Style sheet difficulties..I have setup a link to an ext stylesheet from the header include which is working but something in the main forum seems to be stuffing up my hover links?
2. I can't get my navigation bar to align to the top of the left hand column..
3. I have this problem with the logo from the main config..how do you turn this logo off...I am getting a placeholder that ruins the design...
4. And finally...if I then want to start tweaking the login, navigation etc where are these files and how do I go about adjusting them e.g. to align in the centre etc...are they in the original header.asp?
Thanks a lot for your help. <
mxc369
29 August 2002, 09:31

I have implemented this as well. But when I try to use it , it never Holds. Is there anything special that I need to do to implement this other than what’s in the directions?<
D3mon
29 August 2002, 09:52

Moderator: Can this be moved to MOD help area.
blucas:
4. And finally...if I then want to start tweaking the login, navigation etc where are these files and how do I go about adjusting them e.g. to align in the centre etc...are they in the original header.asp?

All the navigation and login/logout code is in the inc_header.asp file. Simply copy it into the appropriate include file and edit it to suit.
mxc369: Did you run the dbs_Integration.asp file via the admin options to update your database yet? Instrucvtion for this can be found in the latest .zip file.<
mxc369
29 August 2002, 10:09

I have a new forum so I did what you said with the files. I up-loaded them and let them over write the existing ones. I then signed in and did the following:
1. MOD Setup (Alternative MOD Setup)
2. I then ran the setup for your MOD. 3. I then went back to the Site Integration Configuration
4. Once in there I clicked the Site Integration features to on. 5. Every time I do this it says that the Configuration Posted! When I go back into the Site Integration Configuration it is back to the off position.
This MOD is to help integrate the forum into our individual site, correct?
Thanks
Mike
<
D3mon
29 August 2002, 10:17

Yes that's right Mike. The only reason that it is not holding the changes is if the fields in the database aren't present. Are you using Snitz version 3.4.01?<
mxc369
29 August 2002, 10:25

Yes.<
mxc369
29 August 2002, 10:27

Maybe there is a permission I need to change for my database folder
<
D3mon
29 August 2002, 10:38

It should be fine if you were able to create the other database table/fields during setup. Try going to admin options and selecting Check Installation - it may be that the session has not updated yet.<

I assumed that that's OK but I can't be 100% sure about it. Perhaps someone else can help us with this?
Did you try closing the browser completely and opening it again? I found when I was developing the MOD that this helped to reset the code.<

29 August 2002, 11:54

I got it. I never updated the Config file as well. I thought that I could just import the files that were in the ZIP file. Is the Config file the only file that we have to Manually configure for this to work?

<
D3mon
29 August 2002, 12:00

Ah I see. Yes, that's the only one. Trouble is, if I give you a file to overwrite your config.asp, all your DB information will deleted so I had to list the individual changes to that one.
The latest version also has the full list of chages for guys/gals who have modified their forums and don't want to lose their work.
Good to hear you got it working. Enjoy! evilsmile<

Thanks for the prompt reply, I'm already recoding now. It is pretty tough to recognise in the code where the nav starts and stops and what exactly I can cut and paste into the includes. ..am trying the border=1 tips to help...any other clues would be appreciated..e.g. to get rid of the 'messageboard' text? Again many thanks<

What an excellent little MOD! smile
D3mon, how hard would it be to convert this MOD to use on my v3.3.03 forums?<
D3mon
29 August 2002, 15:51

Same code changes in inc_header.asp (inc_top.asp in 3.3.03) and inc_footer.asp just in different places. All the rest should be OK in 3.3.03.<

http://www.buildyourown.org.uk/snitz/mods/inc_site_left.txt

this example will give you basic navigation + login/out functionality from one of the included sections. I'll leave it to you to format it how you wish. To make the navigation list vertically, just replace all the | characters in the function sForumNavigation() with <br /><
mxc369
30 August 2002, 09:37

This looks great. Unfortunately I am not good at HTML so will have to mess around with it. Would I make the changes directly to what you have in the file or does that just refer to another section where I would make the changes. Thanks and good luck on the interview

Thanks. smile <

30 August 2002, 10:11

I am referring to the file that you just posted above. I copied that into the inc_site_leftside.asp file and now I am trying to manipulate it to look the way I want. That’s what I was referring to when I said that I am not that good with HTML. I wish that I could see & manipulate it through FrontPage and copy the underlying code. (I know, I know you hate FrontPage, but right now I have been using it as a crutch. I just started this hobby and have not had the time to learn HTML as well as do my real Job! HAHA)

Another question that I had was how do I erase the current navigation + Login/out section? I want it completely out of the top. I am planning to put it on the Left or right side
<
D3mon
30 August 2002, 19:05

If I'm honest, this is going to be really tricky for someone without a reasonable knowledge of HTML and at least the odd encounter or two with some ASP code. Unfortunately, I can't be on hand to help everyone with a complete rebuild of their forums, so you really need to be able to do the bulk of the work.
You can get the job done with Frontpage, but you'll never really understand what is going on because it purposely hides the nuts'n'bolts code away. If you've been using Frontpage for a while you'll be familiar with some of the basic concepts of building web pages, but if you're fairly serious about coding, make the break into coding HTML by hand, using a text editor of some kind.
You'll find there's a whole other world of flexibilty and features in HTML that Frontpage just doesn't do.smile <
D3mon
31 August 2002, 08:27

Added an extra option to switch the border on/off between areas. Can be useful in diagnosing <table> syntax problems in the includes or even just for effect.<

31 August 2002, 14:58

Hi D3mon, great mod! You need to update inc_header.asp with the Application("down") bugfix if you haven't already done so!
Also, I've found a couple of (minor) bugs in the admin_config_integration.asp page:-

- <!--#INCLUDE FILE="inc_func_common.asp"--> is needed at the top of the file so that the chkRadio function will work correctly.
- The lines which call chkRadio need to be amended for them to read the values, changing chkRadio(strSiteIntegEnabled,0,false) and chkRadio(strSiteIntegEnabled,0,true) to chkRadio(strSiteIntegEnabled, "0", false) and chkRadio(strSiteIntegEnabled, "1", true) (and following the same logic on the other radio boxes) did the trick for me, so you might want to add that to your file.

Top MOD, saved me a ton of work, now I've just got to decide what to put in the asp include files smile!
John

(edit: The "bug" doesn't seem to be a bug after all!)<
D3mon
31 August 2002, 18:25

I inserted the application "down" bugfix, but cannot see the need for the other changes. What functionality will this provide?
inc_func_common.asp is included in inc_header.asp which is included in admin_config_integration.asp. Any functions defined in inc_func_common.asp will be available for calling in admin_config_integration.asp.
What problems did you find with the un-quoted values in the ChkRadio function? Seems OK here..<
joatham
31 August 2002, 23:25

Without the changes, when I loaded the admin page it didn't remember the settings, and when I included the page and made the changes it did. However, I've now changed it back and it works fine, so must've been something else I did at the time, maybe I hadn't made the changes correctly to config.asp to put the variables in.
I've edited the above post now, as it doesn't seem to be a bug after all cool
Once again, this is a brilliant MOD, incredibly useful to me, thanks!

Up until very recently the readme files were a little unclear about the changes needed to config.asp, so that may be why.<
Lydecker
03 September 2002, 09:00

your readme.htm does NOT say to insert the file admin_confi_intergration.asp into your forum directory :)

Also the code to look for in inc_header.asp is different in 3.4.02<
Lydecker
03 September 2002, 09:09

yea - following the instructions for inc_header and footer.asp code modifications in 3.4.02 I get the following error for each::

Found another tiny bug -
When selecting footer and right columns only, the footer/header area does not stretch across 100% of the screen width. Change the following lines in the modified inc_footer.asp to fix it:

Code:

if strSiteLeft = "1" then
if strSiteRight = "1" then
Response.write " colspan=""3"""
else
Response.write " colspan=""2"""
end if
end if

To:

if strSiteRight = "1" then
if strSiteLeft = "1" then
Response.write " colspan=""3"""
else
Response.write " colspan=""2"""
end if
end if

Code:

if strSiteLeft = "1" or strSiteRight = "1" then
if strSiteLeft = "1" and strSiteRight = "1" then
Response.write " colspan=""3"""
else
Response.write " colspan=""2"""
end if
end if

Do the same in inc_header.asp too. Header area was bugged to! .zip has been updated.<

I had similar problems (see my earlier post on page 2 in this thread) and when I made the changes to the chkRadio calls, ran it, it worked fine. Then I changed them back and it still worked fine, so that's why I crossed them out.

It might be worth trying the changes, running it and seeing what happens (I wasn't sure if it was that or that I'd not added the variables correctly to the config.asp though, and haven't had time to look at the chkRadio function more closely to understand it)..<

I know! I should upgrade to v3.4. I will! I just need to book a week off work first... wink<

Ok, I know this may sound like I'm really stupid or something, but I'm not. I get the idea of what is going on here, I've downloaded the zip file and it works grand on a forum. I had no probs at all. I'm not very familiar with ASP but I'm getting there so just bear with me and understand I'm looking at this from an outside point of view......
As I said, Site Integration Mod is set up fine. I have selected 'Site Header' ON in the admin options and 'Show Borders' ON so I can see what is happening. I get the general idea. BUT now I want to know about changing the text 'Header Area' that now appears at the top left of the page.
Maybe I'm looking at this the wrong way dead but I need some guidance. Here is what it currently looks like, its only a testing forum...

Thx.<

Sorry about that Beano_ie. I'll try and get some extra information into the readme on usage - perhaps a guide of some kind. smile<

Excellent MOD! Thank you very much.
Some advice though... I'm using asp includes and have done some work-arounds - that's fine. But when I pull-up a page that uses the "inc_header_short.asp" or "inc_footer_short.asp", I error out.
Is there a way to integrate the integration MOD with the "short" header & footer?

I figured it out. I just added my custom asp in a different includes. Problem solved.
Thanks in advance,
Paul<

I've integrated it with 3.4.3 just fine (except for my unusual circumstances). I believe it was made for 3.4.x.

wonderful bigsmile
ok, another question (sorry - newbie at work):

i set up a left-side section. would it be possible to move the inc_header stuff (logon, home, profile etc) into inc_site_left so that these come up on this section? (like it does in Snitz Exchange)

would they still work, or do they need to be in inc_header so they can do their cookie type stuff??<

Why would this mod not work on the default.asp page, but it works fine on all other pages?<

The Logo on the admin page is static and doesn't show up if images are outside of the forum directory.
One possible solution:

admin_config_integration.asp
Line 133:
" <td width=""300"" align=""center"" bgcolor=""" & strForumCellColor & """><font face=""" & strDefaultFontFace & """ size=""" & strFooterFontSize & """>"
Response.write getCurrentIcon(strTitleImage & "||",strForumTitle,"")
Response.write "</font></td>" & vbNewLine & _

This would replace the Snitz logo with the overall site logo. So if the site logo is showing up on the site, it should on the admin page as well.

I like the way the header on your site looks. How does one add stuff to it? I'd like to add a small menu on the left and perhaps newly posted texts on the right.
Will you be able to coach me? Thanks a bundle.

I've installed this MOD on 3.4.3 at http://bigblue.myaiweb12.com/forums/default.asp (forgive the domain; I'm in the midst of switching web hosts). At the moment I'm only using the header.
Oh D3mon, one minor bug. The Snitz logo reference should use the path variable. I've relocated my images to /forums/images, which causes a broken image in the admin console. Minor quibble, but thought you should know.<

Here is my work in progress, http://the-nut.com/forum . I still have to relocate the forum menu over to the left margin and relocate the login form. But this is my beginning step to migrating my whole site over to ASP.<

DJ5A,

Hey there, guy! Where do you place the html codes again on the inc_header.asp for it to show in the header portion? Also, which file should I modify to get things to show on the left or right portions of the "Site Integrated" page?
'appreciate all the help...
