I just bought a very nice app for energy audits in Access 2002/2003. Now people at my office says that MS has stopped selling/supporting Access in PDA - is that true? In that case it is true - where can I find an "old" PDA running Access? |

yes, it is true...
Access has to much defects and it's really bad Database on our days... (I know it is still used with classic asp websites, but the best is to change to Express edition, even in a Classic ASP website... (such as our lovely Snitz Forum)) remember that 10 years ago the computers were 486DX... with speeds up to 100MHz, now... there are in the market almost 4Ghz! so, big jump!
and that jump went to Databases as well, Access has a limited amount of things comparing to "normal" databases, for example the lack of Store Procedures, the lack of automation in Synchronizing with other databases, etc, and even Microsoft says that Access starts to be "slow" after 64000 rows in one table... so why keeping it?
that's why Microsoft lunched 2 new FREE databases, in the SQL Server 2005 series
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition
Here you can even compare both and choose for what your application will be, they are both for free and I just love them ! So much power over the "little" Access.
Access was good... but not now on our days, now we need more and more, and Express and Compact editions give us exactly what we need (...for now) |

Not sure about Access on PDA, though I don't think that Microsoft's support for Access on PDA's is not such a big issue. As long as you have your PDA, your app will work normally. It may sound less reassuring, but hey, they no longer support a lot of apps and they're still out there.
Now, I don't agree with the previous opinion on Access. SQL Server is definitely no replacement for Access. The DB engine is much more capable, but there are Access capabilities that you won't get that easily in any other environment. The rapid application development characteristics of Access haven't got a replacement that I know of. |

Thx, in the short run I would like to get Access to work in a PDA - I have not yet installed the app because I do not know what PDA is possible to use for running an Access app without any modifications by specialists. Any hints? |

I've stopped using a PDA for quite some time now. It had Access installed, though, and likely you just need to install the app and execute it. My PDA was bought in 2000 and it could run Access, so any of the current PDAs should be able to do it easily. |
