Ok I followed the guide stickied in this forum. The Lock/Unlock commands generated in the text file when exporting the tables were not allowed on my server. I removed them all from the text file and now have all my tables in place.

I exported my Forum_A_Reply table as described in the guide but the max file size through my host on phpadmin is 2,048kb where as my exported txt file is 9.33mb. I have tried importing this file but after a long delay and no error, the table is still showing no records.

Now i'm stuck

Could you make each of the table files smaller like only import like the first 10,50,100,500 ect. then convert each one over in smaller chunks?

Just a thought I have not actually done this but maybe this can key a idea for you.

Maybe it would be worth a go. I'm not sure on average how large these exported table files will be but the reply table would be a big one. I have not attempted any more just yet.

So maybe simply cutting up the exported text file into around 5 chunks and importing seperatly might work?

In logic it seems like that would work. Give it shot its worth a try.

By the way I like the look of your forum looks very clean and nice. I like the color scheme also.

I'll give it a go tomorrow. It's getting late here now.

Thanks for your kind words on my forum. Credit goes to the knowledgable members around here. I'll take credit for the colour scheme though

Sounds great I look forward to hearing how it goes. And I certainly know what you mean by the help from the people around here. I think I recieve more of that help than anyone

I always forget its not even close to the same time there. I kinda get stuck in my world and think everything revolves around it. Its a good reminder that it doesn't lol

You can use Access to export directly to the MySQL database, if it will allow connections from the outside.

Not going as planned. My regular host expires on 6th January, so I may have to stay there for a while.

I tried the exporting directly but I'm not sure I had the ODBC drivers, so a quick search found some but still no go. Could it be that I'm using Access 2003?

I'm now considering paying someone to do the conversion for me, It's almost got me beat.

Access to MySQL conversions can be really hard on your nerves. I know how you're feeling, cause I've done several and almost every single one has a surprise for you. It's hard to find one that goes straightforward, one trick needed here, another needed there...

You need to install MyODBC and then create an ODBC data source for the MySQL database. You will then be able to export the tables from Access to MySQL. You should be aware that it won't create the tables properly in MySQL, but will allow you to have the data that then can be exported to properly created tables, using a tool like SQLYog.

Anyway, if after all this you're still looking for someone to do it, drop me an email.

Cheers Rui. You will be the first to know if I give up completely.

Since my last post I have managed to get the data for 4 tables imported. These were only small tables with the largest exported txt file around 500kb. I was wondering whether it would be worth deleting all or most of my archives to reduce the amount of data needing to be transferred.

To avoid losing anything from the forum during the migration, I need to complete a successful "dry run" then when I have that nailed, close down the forum and rinse and repeat with the latest Access DB. Or am I being too fussy?

Edit. Maybe this would be an ideal time to upgrade to the latest version of Snitz

I agree with you, test it all locally, then move to the live forum. That's how I do it every time.
You shouldn't need to delete the archives, regardless of their size. On one of my migrations, there were about 200,000 replies to be moved and moved they were. It's just a matter of using the right tools.

Ok, I have exported all tables from Access as cvs files and renamed to txt files, I only have my FORUM_A_REPLY.txt file @ 9,561kb which is over the phpMyadmin limit of 2,048kb.

I have looked at the structure of this table and been thinking about breaking it down into smaller chunks as suggested earlier in this topic. I suppose I would have to break it up correctly, I.E. on the first column of the next row if that makes sense.

Edit.. Oh I have 3 months free trial on the new server which has quite good prices and the MySQL. Although I read about archiving problems on certain versions. This looks to be old I think. MySQL 4.0.20-standard

I never use cvs files, Access can export to a ODBC datasource and does it quite well. This would be my choice.

MySQL 4.x works fine.

Ok, I downloaded trial of MySQL-Front and dropped all tables through phpMyadmin. Then with MySQL-Front did a complete import from access and everything seems to be in order

Just need to update url's for avatars etc but have 1 or 2 members floating around in there testing pm's and such.

Only bug found so far. On entering Admin Options I get the Archive reminder. The Back to Forums Administration link goes back to archive functions. I have to hit the update schedules on archive reminders page to get to admin options.

Did you create the tables before importing the data using MysQL Front? You need to, or you will have several problems, both error wise and performance wise (no table indexes, for example).

er no

Basically I did an import of the complete access database. All tables and all data.

Archiving works, PM maintenance works, although the only bug so far appears to be the one in the previous post maybe more would surface in the long run.
