Morning all

I'm having some odd problems with an install of snitz.

I've set the email config to:

CDONTS (IIS 3/4/5)
Email mode: on
Require Unique E-mail: on
E-mail Validation: on
Restrict Registration: off
Require Logon for sending Mail: on

I can send emails between test user accounts without a problem, but when I do a test 'register' the confirmation email never arrives! Since I'm using CDONTS I shouldnt have any issues with mailserver settings and so forth, I know CDONTS work on the server becuase I use them in the main site without any problems.

anyone got any ideas whats going on?

oh - I've just tested the password reminder email and that works.

have you checked the recipients spam filters ? the registration confirmations contain a link and may therefore be being trapped by a spam filter

well the recipiant in both cases is me on a couple of email addresses I have, neither has any type of spam or junk filters set up since I use them for testing stuff like this - good thought though.

I just changed all the 'on error resume next' lines to 'on error goto 0' and tried to register - no errors came back, it seems to be going through the process just fine, but not actually sending out the email

Have you looked at your mailserver? There may well be a queue forming somewhere for no good reason?

yeah, theres nothing sitting waiting there.

The odd thing is, i just tested it with hotmail address and it worked. I've tested it this morning with 5 email addresses, all on different hosts. 2 have worked and 3 havent.

Sounds like it's outside your control :(

With 17 out of every 20 emails being sent in the world being junk, there's a lot of unnecessary server load and indeed spam false positives. Tragedy of the commons, anyone?

are you able to use any kind of logging at the mail server to ascertain whther or not the mail is actually being sent out ?

Given what you've said, it may still be that the client e-mail provider is blocking it and not even sending it to the "Junk Mail" folder for the recipient to deal with it. I found out a while ago that excite.com was blocking all e-mails from my host's e-mail server - no e-mails ever even made it to the "Junk Mail" folder... I complained and their reply was "Tough cookies" (in a more customer-servicey way).

If that is the case, I'm not sure what options you have...

HuwR - well, not really. At least not that I could find. I've added some error checks to the inc_mail script to try and see where things are going wrong but it seems all the info is correct and the server thinks its sent an email.

AnonJr - thats a possibility I guess, the host is Fasthosts though and I'm fairly sure they arent blocked by our IT department since we use them for a fair ammount of hosting.

Next step is to ring fasthosts and go 'WTF!?' down the phone at them I think...

You would think so , but I'm not sure its the web host's problem.

I'm assuming that based on your comment the e-mails aren't being received by your company's e-mail server? If that's the case, the first step may be to check with the server admin and see what's going on. I've had some odd stuff blocked here at the hospital because of some poorly written filters.

well yes and no, I didnt get the email through my company email address however the guy sitting oposite me did. It worked via hotmail but not via an address attached to my personal website (accessed via webmail - no filtering) it worked once for a guy in canada, then not for subsequent registrations for people with email addresses at the same domain. it seems utterly random! I'm trying to find a way of tracking the activity of CDO at the moment but i'm not sure I can

I've got exactly the same problem here. I'll start my own thread for it though so as not to hijack Chris's.
