A friend of mine just asked me if I could help make a website. It has to be a paid access site, and since I've never done anything like that I'd like to know if anyone can give me some pointers on how to go about this.

As for the content: I'm not exactly sure what they want to put on it, but I know it'll be "personal" to some extent. I believe a lot of hosts won't allow porn, but since it won't be like that (that much I do know), I was wondering if you know a good host that'll allow "adult content".

For a starter site I would say to use paypal for your subscription. I did a site that used snitz that gave the user XX amount of free days, and then after the free trial was up then it had them pay to be a member for another XX amount of days.

So it wont be porn but will just be adult content liek stories and things?

Probably stories and some pictures that don't show (complete) nudity. At least that's what I understood.

Am I right when I think that by using PayPal, you'll have to "approve" each new member after (s)he has paid? Or can that be an automatic process of some sort?

We use a combination of Clickbank and PayPal for sites that are not large enough to warrant their own credit card solutions.

The reason I like Clickbank is that you instantly can have affiliates.

One of the main reasons for the success of our JobintheSun.com was this - you set your commssion rate and instantly people start to link to you.... I think we have over 2000 affiliates already.... and all their links help in terms of link popularity with the search engines.

For adult type hosts - many charge a lot for not getting a lot back in return,

A good hosting company that does both sides of the arena - i.e. they have a "normal" side and a "adult" side - is reliablehosting.com

It depends on your friends business plan and model to see if he will be able to afford the prices though.

I think they have their own ecommerce solution too - which may be preferable to paypal or clickbank.

hope this helps in some way.

hmmmm

just read policy statement on Clickbank....

I think there may be problems on a lot of these 3rd party merchant services with adult rated content.

Looks like there's a lot for me to look into... and I hate reading all that technical information. Oh well, it might turn out useful in the future.
