First off, do I need a database like sqlserver/mysql/access?
I don't have any of those. Is there a way around this? I just downloaded the scripts for the forum and have them in the right folders. I just need to configure them, but I'm guessing I need a database of some sort after reading the README.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

There is an Access DB in the tools.zip (that you might have already unzipped into a /tools directory). It has the filename of: snitz_forums_2000.mdb
